PBS Bar — Handbook

PBS Bar is the till, the floor, the bookings and the books for a pub. This address runs a demonstration: the pub, its menu and its prices are invented, and everything you ring up stays on the device you are using. There is nothing to sign in to. Every screen carries a ? in the top bar that opens this page, and Privacy and Terms beside it.

Till

Food and Drinks switch the keys; tap a key to put it on the bill. The bill shows each line, Net, VAT and the TOTAL. Press and hold a line to void it — a brush of the screen never voids anything — and a voided line stays on the bill, struck through, with its reason.

Send sends what is new on the bill to the kitchen and shows the docket (a docket never carries a price). Pay settles the bill: choose Card or Cash, or Split it two to six ways — the shares always add back to the bill, and the odd penny goes to the first share. The receipt shows once it is paid.

Open tabs

Above the till, Open tabs lists every order still open — a table from the floor, or a named tab — with what is on it so far. Tap one to put it back in hand and add the next round. Open a tab starts a tab under the name you type in Name on the tab. New bar order puts the current one down so you can serve someone at the counter. A tab stays open through any number of rounds until it is paid, and open tabs are kept on the device — a reload or a restart does not lose them.

Floor

The plan: every table in its area, with its seats. A table's seats are counted from the chairs placed against it, never typed in. Tap a table to open its bill on the till.

Bookings

Party, When and They asked for (a window, the fire, step-free access…) → Find a table. Suitable tables come first; if nothing that size is free, a bigger table is offered rather than saying "full", and tables that can be pushed together are offered too. Book it holds the table.

Books

Today, so far — orders settled, gross takings, net, VAT, and anything still waiting to send — since the last Z reading. Compliance lists what the law asks for that is not yet in place: a dish nobody has checked for allergens, a notice not confirmed this year, training not recorded.

Take the Z reading closes the takings it covers and prints the reading: orders, items sold, gross, net and VAT; voided money shown beside the takings, never inside them; sales by category; what was taken by card and by cash; and Rung up but not paid, which should be £0.00 — if it is not, something was rung up and not paid for, and that is the first thing to look at. The next reading starts from nothing.

Ordering from the table

A customer opens order.html?t= and the table's label from the QR code on the table. The first question is what they cannot eat; anything that contains it, or that nobody has checked yet, is marked and cannot be added — and anything already in their basket that is no longer safe comes back out.

What this does not do

• It does not take card payments. The till records how a bill was paid; the card itself goes through your own terminal.
• It does not print. Dockets and receipts are shown on screen; nothing drives a printer yet.
• The demonstration keeps everything on the device you are using. It is not connected to a database, so two tills do not see each other's tabs.
• It certifies nothing. The compliance list is a record of what is and is not in place, not a certificate.
